'Hormone controversy' Indian sprinter Chand gets 4-year ban for doping

Dutee Chand (28-India), who finished second in both the women's 100 and 200 meters at the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games, has been handed a four-year ban for taking a banned substance.

Chand, who has sparked controversy with levels of male hormones at the level of normal men and was the first Indian track and field athlete to come out as gay, was forced to retire amid the doping scandal.

"The four-year ban was finalized after Chand failed to prove his innocence," the Times of India reported on Monday.

Chand was given a "temporary suspension" in January after his urine sample submitted in December last year was found to contain banned substances including andarine and ostarine.

At the time, Chand posted on social media, "Take me down. I will come back stronger," Chand maintained his innocence, though he was unable to prove it.

Chand emerged as a star of Indian track and field after winning two silver medals at the Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games.

It had been 32 years since India had won a silver medal in the women's 100 meters since P.T. Usha at the 1986 Seoul Asian Games. Chand also won silver in the women's 200 meters.

Chand also holds the Indian women's 100-meter record of 11.17 seconds.

In fact, Chand made a name for herself in world athletics not because of her performance, but because of her "hormonal issues".

In July 2014, the World Association of Athletics Federations indefinitely banned her from competing in women's events because "her levels of male hormones were higher than the norm."

Chand had a blood level of testosterone above 10 nmol/L (10 nanomoles per liter of blood, where nano is one billionth of a part per billion).

Normal testosterone levels for women range from 0.12 to 1.79 nanomoles per liter (nmol/L), and for men from 7.7 to 29.4 nmol/L.

At the time, the World Association of Athletics Federations claimed that these were "unacceptable levels of testosterone for a woman" and that Chand would have to be medicated or surgically lowered to compete internationally.

Chand refused and took WADA to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

After a long and tedious battle, the CAS ruled in July 2015 that "there is no problem with Chand's ability to compete in women's events."

As a result, Chand competed in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and has been free to compete internationally ever since.

Chand made headlines in May 2019 when he confessed that he had been in a relationship with a woman he met in his hometown for five years.

In September 2018, the Indian Supreme Court struck down the Criminalization of Sexual Behavior with Persons of the Same Sex Act, also known as the "anti-gay law," as unconstitutional.

"The Supreme Court's decision gave me the courage to come out," Chand said, adding, "Everyone in the world is free to love everyone. Love is an irresistible emotion."

Since then, Chand has received threats, but has also become a symbol of sports human rights in India.

Last year, Chand announced that he would retire after the 2024 Paris Olympics.

However, a four-year ban for taking banned substances will prevent Chand from competing in Paris. 토토
